What I mean here is, if you crank up your input gain to the point that it would be breaking up, does that faint noise sound like it is broken up? If so, the signal is probably making it through the preamp okay. I'm not sure how easy that is to do on an ac30.Īnother step to troubleshooting is to pay attention to your input and output gains. On a fender Princeton, I know you can easily just remove the Reverb tank from the circuit. If the tremolo is all the way up or down, do you notice a difference? Does the tremolo even work when the amp is quiet? A similar deal with the Reverb.

For example, mess around with the tremolo. You can step your way through and see if anything stands out to you. I say minor, because otherwise you would just lose all of the signal.Īssuming it's both channels that are having the problem, then you need to move on to the rest of the amp. Could it be as simple as a dirty contact on the input jack? Another thing that can cause this is a very minor short Circuit, where most of your signal is somehow getting funneled to ground. Does the problem happen on both channels? If not, then the problem is somewhere in the one preamp section. You have essentially two preamp channels going into the power amp. Next, you want to figure out where it is going wrong in the amp. So, now we have at least narrowed it down to the amp.

I'll assume you already did this, but did you change the patch cable and guitar? I'll also assume that you had removed any pedals between the guitar and amp. First, make sure to rule out anything stupid. Unfortunately, there is no way to directly tell you what is wrong without better diagnostics. Well, the intermittent nature of your problem probably indicates that it is something relatively simple.

If anybody has any advice or instructions on how to troubleshoot this issue it would be greatly appreciated! I need my amp :'(įor anyone reading this with the same problem, /u/Dumbassestry 's suggestion of plugging a patch cable in the send/return seems to have worked! I've read online this could maybe be a rectifier tube issue? It's the only tube I didn't change when I was in there, but I don't really want to go ordering more and more stuff just to continue having a broken amp. Turning it off and then on again brought it back for a moment, and then it dropped back down again and doesn't seem to be coming back. It doesn't completely stop putting out sound, but rather gets REALLY low, almost like you're hearing a phone speaker on the minimum volume setting. I just put in fresh JJ's and it sounded nice and crispy and everything seemed great, but just now it did it again and went nearly silent! It came back to life a minute or so later but I didn't trust it so I ordered replacement tubes (only power and pre-amp). I've had it for a few months and recently at a practice it just kinda "died" and went nearly silent.

I am trying to fix this on my own so I can either learn something new or die from electrocution.Hiya, I have a Vox AC30CC2. The second one is just a simple 120> 24v one you can get in most hardware stores.Īny advice would be great. Has anyone encountered this type of problem with one of these newer (2005ish) vox ac30s? I took out the pre amp board with the fx loop today, gave everything a good cleaning, tested what I could with my DMM, I've cleaned all the pots, checked the power transformer with the DMM everything seems to be okay, the power going to the rectifier is a bit high (should be 591v but instead is reading 610-620) When I turn it on the volume is almost non existent, the sound is really muddy as well regardless of what channel I have it on. So awhile back I posted about replacing my transformer, found out it was the wrong type, now I have the 120>240v and a smaller 120>24v both installed.
